PSSM1 is the only scientifically validated equine muscle disorder with a confirmed genetic test. It affects glycogen synthase 1, the enzyme responsible for building the body's storage form of sugar. The mutation breaks the regulatory system, causing cells to continuously produce and store glycogen regardless of whether the cell needs it.
